Howdy cowpokes!
It’s spring! …and I’m late! Sorry about the delay on this update. We’re very close to the finish line, so I’ve pretty much had my nose to the grindstone.
Unfortunately this month’s update isn’t as visually compelling, but it is perhaps still the most exciting!
HOW EDITING WORKS!

If you remember February’s update, our mixing engineer/mastering engineer/absolute sound dynamo is Dean Gray. He’s incredibly talented and we’ve been working jointly to put the show together. When we last left off, Dean was working on synthesizing the orchestra. We got that finished on April 4 and got right into the final mixdown!
Editing is sometimes grueling, but also magical. It’s incredibly satisfying to see and hear what’s been in your head come to life.
Here’s a little rundown of what the editing process has looked like for this project:
STEP 1
After everyone has recorded their lines, pick the best takes and trim unnecessary pauses or mistakes. Clip each individual line and then export each one as its own audio file. Just for fun, here is how many audio files each character ended up with!
- Narrator: 19 lines
- Don Guillermo: 21 lines
- Ranger Roscoe: 41 lines!

STEP 2
Create a new project that is split into three main sections:
- Voiceover (VO)
- Music
- Foley (Sound effects/SFX)
STEP 3
Place those VO audio files on the track so that the characters feel like they’re actually talking to each other.
STEP 4
Drop the music tracks in the right spots. Lower the volume so they don’t overpower the VO.
STEP 5
Drop in foley/SFX in accordance with the environments, ambience, and action. Same deal with the volume. Don’t overpower the VO.
Editing is sometimes grueling, but also magical. It’s incredibly satisfying to see and hear what’s been in your head come to life.
STEP 6 (Optional)
Make it sound old and bad (on purpose 😉 see the Brian Eno quote below)
THE FINISHED PRODUCT 😮 🙌

Yep, there it is. Crazy to think that months of work is encapsulated in this not-so-little Wav file.

’til then, Happy Trails.
P.S. Here’s that Brian Eno quote I promised.
“Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit – all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.”
